Abstract
As part of their on-going commitment to safety leadership, this mining and metals business chose as their Breakthrough a 'Zero Injury' target in the course of work we did from 2004 to 2007.
Facilitated individually and in teams, the leadership of the site was supported and challenged to uncover the obvious and the subtle aspects of why incidents occurred and to then to undertake the sometimes challenging tasks required to address performance and process issues that resulted in risk . New training, audit and work-process design were successfully implemented and integrated.
As individuals' mindsets progressed from 'socialised' to 'self-authoring', increasing their capacity for complex thinking, all measures of safety performance underwent step change improvement.
Note especially that LTIFR and LTI were both 0 for 2007. In fact, compared to the previous five years the site reduced the number of medically referred injuries by 92 %. At the same time, profitability increased; these were not trade-offs.
The President of the site stated that “this result was achieved through the [development of] positive and responsible attitudes of the employees and contractors on-site”.
They received the Governor General’s Award for safety in October 2007.
